Habits That Encourage Reading

1. Always Carry a Book with You

This may seem obvious, but it should be mentioned first because it will be challenging to read a book if you do not have one with you to read it. This does not necessarily mean that you must carry a real book around with you, as many apps allow you to download books whenever it is convenient for you, so find the best way to keep a book with you at all times and then carry it with you throughout the day.

2. Limit the Time You Spend Watching TV or Playing on Your Phone

You need to first estimate how much time you actually spend watching TV or playing on your phone with this habit. Once you are aware of this time, you can make a goal to reduce it by just 15 minutes and substitute reading a book for that time. Although 15 minutes may not seem like much, the more time you spend reading, the more balance and productivity you will experience in your life.

3. Read a Book for Someone Else

This may seem a little strange at first, but it is very effective. If you read aloud to someone else, you are encouraging them to learn and explore through the reading art in addition to developing your own skill set. The more you read to someone, the more likely it is that you two will develop a close bond and strong relationship that is challenging to do in any other way.

4. Read Both Fiction and Non-Fiction Books

Once you start reading consistently, you'll develop a preference for certain types of books over others. Finding a topic or genre style that you read about frequently is excellent and will help you and your career move forward.

With this in mind, once your reading habit takes hold, you should keep track of the number of fiction and non-fiction books you read over a year. Your aim should be to read a good, balanced amount of both, allowing different parts of your mind to engage and interact with books.

5. Read Books from Friends Recommendations

As with anything in life, not every recommendation you get from a friend or colleague will necessarily fit your needs, and the same is true of books. However, nothing is better than deciding to read a book that has been recommended to you by a close friend and has the potential to become one of your favorites.

Additionally, when you read books that others have read, you can communicate with them more directly, and they will start asking you about the books you enjoy, which can create a more enjoyable shared experience.

6. Visit the Bookstore

Everybody has their favorite stores to shop at, and for the majority of people, a bookstore is not on this list. No matter where you live, there must be a good bookstore close by. Whether it's a chain or a small, independent shop, you should look around your neighborhood to find the best one and visit it at least once a month. You will want to read more books as you shop there more frequently.

7. Choose the Best Time and Day for Reading

When it comes to reading, others are always willing to share their thoughts on the ideal time to read. Some people like to read first thing in the morning, while others like to read right before bed. Some of them prefer to read for five to ten minutes every two hours because it gives them a boost of energy.

Regardless of what other people think, you must experiment to find the best time for you. Once you've done that, you can stick to that time and form a reading habit.

In Conclusion

If you aren't reading right now, it might seem like a difficult task that will overwhelm you and prevent you from starting. Like any new endeavor, you must begin by taking the first step, which is preferable to doing nothing.

Therefore, choose a book you want to read and carry it with you. You might be surprised by how many times you read from the book to establish a reading habit that can bring you happiness and commitment throughout your life.
