“ Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” - Swiss psychologist Carl Jung.

Note: This article is based on the work of the author Marc Chernoff, in which he tells us about his experience with mindfulness and its role in changing lives.

Mindfulness as a daily ritual is the ultimate challenge and practice, it is a way to live, exist, see, and harness the full power of your humanity.

Mindfulness Essence Is

  • Being aware of what is happening in the present moment without wanting it to be different.
  • Savoring each enjoyable experience without holding on to it when it's gone (which it will).
  • Living every unpleasant experience without fearing that it will always be this way (which it won't).

Knowing this is important, and living each day in a way that makes mindfulness possible will change your life.

Here are 12 fundamental (practical) laws of mindfulness that we frequently discuss with coaching clients who are gradually making mindful living a reality:

1. The Present Moment You Are in Is the Only Truth

  • The secret of mental, physical, and spiritual health is not regretting the past, nor worrying about the future; Rather, living the present moment consciously and purposefully.
  • True wealth is the ability to fully experience the present moment, for there is no other true time or place in which you can achieve a lifetime of peace and abundance in such simple awareness.

2. Negative Thoughts Are Harmful Only You Believe in Them

  • What causes you to suffer is not your thoughts, but your attachment to them.
  • Attachment to thought is the belief that it is true without evidence. A belief is just a thought that you have often attached to for years.

3. You won’t be punished for your anger, but by it

  • You will always regret the words and deeds you do when you speak and act out of your anger.
  • It's easy to be angry and unhappy about something. But doing something productive about it is the hard and worthwhile part. Life is too precious and too short to be spent in annoyance, so let things go as they are, be positive, and show yourself in the best light.

4. Knowing How to Belong to Oneself without Seeking Approval from Others Is the Key to Inner Peace

  • Sometimes, you have to step away from the world to understand it.
  • Sometimes you justify your actions to others when you stop feeling at peace with your thoughts, you don't ask anyone else to permit you to be yourself, you don't need anyone's permission to be happy or to live a good life.

5. Everything Happens Twice, First in Your Mind and Then in Your Life

  • If you don't believe in specific values, you will get carried away with any thought.
  • Keep your morals at the core of your heart and among your top priorities.

12 Laws of Mindfulness That Will Change Your Life

6. There Will Be Times When You Are Alone, No Matter How Many People You Have Around You

  • Others can be on your side, but they can never replace you.
  • Give yourself a chance to discover who you really are, why you're always lonely even when you're surrounded by others, and why it's totally okay.

7. Believing strongly in something and not living it is dishonest

  • Don't compromise, don't diminish your dreams, don't justify every feeling, and don't follow every trend. Instead, follow your strong feelings consciously and mindfully.
  • Distinguish yourself by your actions, and you will never be fooled by the words of others.

8. The Easy Way Is Rarely the Right One

  • You will eventually realize that obstacles are not stations on the way; It is the way itself, and it deserves your attention. Every step forward may be difficult, but it will make you feel better than anything else you can imagine.
  • People never stop pursuing their dreams and passions because they grow up, they grow because they stop pursuing them.

9. You Must Be Willing to Pay the Price to Obtain What You Want in Life

  • Instead of thinking about what you want, think first about what you are willing to give up for it. You cannot reach your destination without a journey. Therefore, if you want to be in shape, you have to face muscle fatigue and sweaty clothes, and you have to spend some of your mornings and afternoons in the gym, in addition to eating healthy meals.
  • What would you consider to be worth suffering? If you notice that you keep wanting the same thing over the days or months but never act on it, you haven't made any progress and it's possible that you don't really want it after all because you're unwilling to put forth the necessary effort and work to make it happen.

10. Overcommitment Is the Antithesis of Living a Calm, Mindful Life

  • There's a difference between committing to the right things and overcommitting to everything. It's tempting to fill every waking minute of the day with things from your to-do list or distractions. So don't do this to yourself, and make room for you to breathe.
  • Maintain an orderly life and a comfortable schedule. Build your life on a solid foundation while allowing for a large margin of error and room to think and breathe.

11. You Enjoy Too Little When You Try to Control Too Much

  • Don't live a life full of strict plans, work hard but be flexible, the best moments often happen without planning, and the greatest regrets are because of not getting exactly as planned.
  • Sometimes you just need to let go, forgive, relax, take a deep breath, and love what is in the now.

12. When You Are Exhausted, You Might Experience Attacks from Previously Defeated Thoughts

  • You have to recharge regularly, and that means catching your breath, finding a quiet place to isolate yourself, focusing your attention inward, and taking time to recover from your routine chaos.
  • It's perfectly healthy to stop and leave the world alone, and if you don't, you're going to burn out.

In Conclusion

After finishing this article, I was reminded that busyness is the number one enemy of good thinking and, by extension, mindfulness. Being busy is neither virtue nor respectable. We all experience periods of overbooked schedules, but very few of us can justify being so busy all the time. We also lack the skills to live within our means, set proper priorities, and know when to say no.
