I've had the privilege of speaking as a motivational speaker at numerous seminars hosted by different companies. In the Q&A session, participants frequently confess that their true motivation for attending is "to grow and learn."

Note: This article is based on the work of Yousuf Rafi, who tells us about the importance of learning something new every day to ensure long-term success.

Why is learning something new so crucial? Why do people invest their money in self-motivation? I ask myself this question daily, and I am still looking for a satisfactory response.

However, the harsh reality is that people are not taught to search for advantages within the organizations they work for. Nowadays, the majority of organizations see "learning something new" as something secondary that can be disregarded or as something that can be done individually without creating an environment that encourages employees to grow and learn new things.

In his report, author Chris Miller examines the benefits of growth promotion for organizations. Additionally, why should the administrative level be where the learning process starts? The prominent conclusions drawn from his report are as follows:

  • Teach them to move forward and take lessons from their past.
  • Act and don't be afraid of managers. Individuals struggling with a growth mindset are aware that anxiety and fear can paralyze thought processes.
  • Make the extra effort and strive for daily improvement.
  • Be flexible; things won't always go according to plan, so develop resilience in the face of difficulty.
  • It's the mark of a tough person not to whine when things don't go their way.

Managers should foster their subordinates' development to get a broad perspective on life. Attending an online course is insufficient; you must also recognize, value, and capitalize on each person's unique strengths. Therefore, you should help and motivate them to learn something new daily.

Strategies that help employees achieve long-term success

1. True Learning Originates Internally

Self-development is the ideal place to start. You must develop and learn something new every day, whether or not your organization encourages a learning culture. Therefore, begin with yourself, identify the areas that require more focus, and note the concepts that have proven helpful in reaching these objectives. After that, share your answers with your team members.

Call a meeting after each seminar, and instead of just sharing pleasantries, ask people to share what they learned. Teaching something you understand is the best way to learn it truly.

Make learning enjoyable. You'll be more successful in changing people's restrictive behaviors if you use a fun teaching style.

Continuous learning

2. Praising for Success and Failure

According to psychology professor Carol Dweck's study, people don't just naturally find their passion in life. Instead, they work on it and strive to make it better. The best way to discover your passion is to learn new things, such as mastering an online task management tool that keeps track of your staff or enrolling in a new course that could help you progress in your career. You must discover a reason for learning and encourage others to try new things.

Following my consulting for a global brand, they experienced a threefold increase in sales as their staff began to recognize and celebrate small victories and show gratitude for each other's efforts, even in the face of setbacks. Anyone can complain, but it takes a real manager or leader to recognize their subordinates' efforts and shamelessly celebrate their failures.

3. Paving the Way for Employees

As a manager, my coworkers always tried to put their subordinates in difficult situations by creating obstacles. However, a true leader removes all obstacles and gives the team freedom to accomplish its tasks. Project management is not an easy task, but the ability to remove all obstacles and create an environment where subordinates can work freely sets a manager apart from a boss.

Recognize the stress level of your subordinates and give them some freedom rather than just issuing them orders. Many employees have complained to me that after their boss suggested a development course, they would later send them emails forcing them to leave the learning sessions to handle work-related matters.

4. Encouraging New Experiences

According to research, each of us needs to be more conscious of our limitations and actively seek opportunities for personal development. As they say, if you always do what you used to, you will always get what you used to.

Let your subordinates see the consequences of their decisions rather than controlling and shielding them. When you give them the freedom to concentrate on the learning opportunities that are most important to them, they gain more and feel more powerful.

Unfortunately, when someone overachieves in their roles, new experiences can be frightening. People can only learn how to handle problems by carrying their share of the load. Even though you and your team might not always succeed, you can still learn a lot from the experience.

Companies invest time and money in their employees without taking the necessary steps to guarantee that leaders foster a learning culture, as senior management has significant and direct influence. Therefore, you must first grow yourself before teaching others how to grow.
