We wonder:

  • How and when will I find another job?
  • How will I pay bills or rent and support my children?
  • When will the economic situation improve?
  • Will it improve at all?

These questions cross our minds as we spend hours looking for work and submitting our resumes to online employers. Next is the job interview, and when we get that initial call, our expectations are raised.

“We reviewed your resume and liked what we saw,” the recruitment manager says. But subsequently, those hopes are dashed with the second or third call, or sometimes they just send a formal email stating, “We decided to hire another candidate whose skills better match the job qualifications after completing the interviews. We hope your continued job search goes well.”

Receiving such a message is worse than being laid off. Rejection is never easy, and living in uncertainty does not make things easier. Unemployment is undoubtedly unpleasant. However, what if we took a different approach? Is there any bright side to it? Consider your life before your first job. What was your dream?

I’m not talking about your goals or plans; I’m talking about your dream, that far-off idea you pondered during lectures or talked about in college with friends. Could the painful blow of leaving a job we hated actually be a blessing in disguise? Could it be a call to realize that it's time to follow our hearts instead of our opinions?

Why Unemployment Can Be Positive?

Therefore, instead of focusing on all the negative aspects of unemployment, here are four reasons why it can be positive:

1. Waking Up Early with Open Options

Gone are the days when we had to schedule our entire day, week, year, or even lives. Instead of waking up at 5 a.m., heading to the gym for a 45-minute workout, returning home to shower, then hitting the road by 7:30 and arriving at the office by 8:45 - 9, depending on traffic congestion, we can finally wake up and enjoy the quiet and fresh opportunities that a new day brings. Perhaps you might want to practice yoga, cook your life partner a delicious dinner, start writing the book you've always wanted to write, paint, sculpt, take a walk on the beach, or even spend the entire day in bed because you haven't had the opportunity to do so in 15 years.

Unemployment

Now that our days aren't time-restricted, we can finally choose how to spend them. Even better, we can finally avoid planning anything for our day and just let it happen instead of attempting to manage our time and impatiently counting down the minutes until we can escape the office.

2. Having Time for Exercise

Gyms often use reverse psychology to make people feel guilty. For example, they might say: Don’t use your job as an excuse to avoid going to the gym or overeating and gaining weight. However, how many fitness trainers have ever worked 40–60 hours a week alongside cleaning, cooking, and child or pet care?

Despite its challenges, unemployment is the ideal opportunity to put yourself first. So go for a bike ride, a stroll, or a gym membership. Take your partner on a relaxing date for the first time in a long time, and maintain your physical fitness together. Then, instead of grabbing fast food during your lunch break, head back home and make a delicious and nutritious meal.

This is the time you truly need to prioritize yourself. Your mood will improve rapidly, and you might even shed some weight.

3. Volunteering

Helping someone in need is one of the best ways to feel good about yourself. Therefore, dedicate your time to helping others, even for just one day during your unemployment.

You can feed the homeless, read a book to school children, or mentor someone. Volunteering provides immense satisfaction and numerous advantages. Let’s remind ourselves that things can have always been worse, and for many, they already are.

4. Self-Management

Have you ever dreamed of having your own business? Or maybe working remotely?

Taking control of your time can provide you with freedom. You'll be more flexible, which will help you strike a better life-work balance. Whether you choose entrepreneurship or seek another job within a company, investing this time of unemployment in self-discovery is essential. Then, prioritize meeting your own needs.

Remember that you’ll find a job again; the economy is cyclical and on the verge of recovery. Meanwhile, fill your free time with positivity and initiative. Learn about yourself so that when you do find a new job, it won't define who you are. Instead, you will determine how your chosen project fits into your life.

In Conclusion

Even though unemployment may seem like a heavy burden, we can transform it into a positive opportunity to improve our lives.

We can create a happier and more fulfilled life for ourselves by waking up early with open options, having time to exercise, volunteering, and self-management.
