Despite facing opposition from the United States and being banned in several countries like India and Pakistan, the app continued to thrive. Moreover, even Facebook resorted to various tactics to undermine TikTok after failing to acquire it. In this article, we'll delve into the success story of Zhang Yiming, shedding light on his professional, practical, and personal life. Stay tuned for insights in the following paragraphs.

The Early Life Of Zhang Yiming, His Upbringing, And Academic Pursuits

Zhang Yiming was born in Fujian Province, China, in 1983. He initially pursued a specialization in microelectronics before shifting his focus to software engineering at Nankai University. Nankai University, established in 1919, is a renowned public research institution in Tianjin, China, and is classified as one of the top universities by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Zhang completed his studies at Nankai University in 2005.

The Beginning of Zhang Yiming's Professional And Practical Life

Zhang's professional journey began in 2006 when he started working at the "Kuxun" site. By 2007, he had been promoted to the position of Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of the site. However, in 2008, Zhang decided to leave his job and joined Microsoft. His tenure at Microsoft was brief, and he soon departed from the company. Subsequently, Zhang joined the startup "Fanfou", but unfortunately, the venture didn't endure due to its failure.

In 2012, Zhang Yiming founded his company "ByteDance," which has since skyrocketed in value to $75 billion. The company's inaugural product was the "Toutiao" app, an independent news platform distinct from the Chinese search engine giant "Baidu."

In September 2016, Zhang introduced an app enabling users to craft short lip-sync videos, a project he developed in a mere 200 days. Initially rolled out in China as "Douyin," the app swiftly gained popularity, attracting 100 million users within a single year and accumulating over a billion video views daily. This remarkable success encouraged Zhang to take the app to a global audience. Consequently, in 2017, TikTok was officially launched in international markets, marking a significant debut in the United States and across Asia.

Just two months after the launch of this app, ByteDance acquired the startup company "Musical.ly" for a staggering $1 billion. Musical.ly, based in Shanghai, was targeted for its young user base in the digital platform, which ByteDance aimed to leverage.

Not stopping there, in August 2018, Zhang merged TikTok with Musical.ly, aiming to create a larger video community by integrating data and accounts into one platform, TikTok. It's worth noting that TikTok retains its original name, Douyin, in China.
