You procrastinate whenever you try to launch your project or achieve your new goal. At first, you pretend you have wasted a long time. Then, you procrastinate because you are simply not used to working at this time of day or in this way.

Sometimes, procrastination gives you a temporary opportunity to reflect carefully on your unconscious ideas, but deep down, you doubt that you are doing what you are supposed to be doing.

Sure, you convinced yourself with kind words, but your subconscious has other options that are trying to stop you from fulfilling your current obligations. If this happens every time you try to complete your tasks, perhaps you should reconsider your thoughts.

Is Doubt Real?

Sometimes, when it is difficult for you to do something, your mind begins to justify the necessity of avoiding doing this work. If the doubt disappears at the moment you are about to complete this work, this means that your doubt is just a desire to avoid the difficult part of the work.

However, if you feel doubt and experience sleep deprivation every time you try to get work done, believing the illusion that you are on the wrong path, this means that you have a problem that needs to be solved.

4 Tips to Overcome Doubt

Here are 4 tips to overcome doubt:

1. Ignore your expectations and remember the purpose of your goal

What often raises this doubt is the gap between your view of the goal you are trying to achieve and what that goal actually is. This usually happens when you set out to achieve a big and wonderful goal, only to be surprised later that your goal is ordinary and basic.

So, let go of these expectations. When you tell yourself, “This is not what I expected,” focus on the task at hand and do not think about anything else.

Staying motivated is not easy. You need to remind yourself why you chose this particular goal. Why did you start running, programming, drawing, or whatever you set out to achieve? Remind yourself why, write it down on a piece of paper, and stick it on your door to see it every time you leave for a run, or stick it on the computer screen to see it every time you sit down to learn programming.

2. Ignore other options

A recent study on people's decision-making habits revealed a certain problem. The more information people get and the more they carefully consider each option, the more likely they are to make an incorrect decision.

This may seem illogical at first glance, but when you spend longer time studying each option, you make more effort, which ultimately pushes you to make the easier option.

The more information you have, the more confused you will be in choosing the right decision. If you focus only on the things you like about something, you won't have any problems.

When you look at various options - including the ones you initially didn't like - you become more confused and suspicious.

Even worse, the more you consider your options, the more inclined you become to feel regret after making your final decision, and the more your doubts increase about the validity of the decision you made.

If you unleash your imagination and consider your other options from time to time, you intensify your doubt and make it an obstacle that is difficult to overcome. To avoid this mistake, you should ignore any other options from the beginning.

3. Rewrite how you think about yourself

Writer James Clear talked about a concept called identity-based habits. It is a renewal of an old method of self-improvement, which says that starting with small steps and sticking to them is much better than starting with big steps and giving up quickly.

Actor Bruce Lee believed that working continuously and slowly is better than working intensively for a short period.

The idea is to take small steps to rewrite your perception of yourself over time, so that you gradually change how you see yourself.

Your steps must be small so that you can follow them continuously every day, but at the same time, they must be meaningful to actually influence your thinking.

4. Stick to the right choice

It is easy to think that you have chosen the wrong path and give up under the pretext that you will follow the right path when you find it.

However, there is another way other than moving from one domain to another trying to find your purpose.

The idea is to master a skill that leads to passion, satisfaction, and happiness in your work. It is derived from the book So Good They Can’t Ignore You by Cal Newport.

This means that the right choice is the one you stick with. As long as you stick with a choice, you will get better at doing what you choose to do.

As you master it, your passion and enjoyment will increase. Remembering this idea is a great way to silence your inner doubt and maintain a steady path toward your current goal.

In Conclusion

Once you begin to overcome doubt and form your conviction, your resistance to taking action will diminish and become just a small obstacle that you can easily overcome. Every day you have an opportunity to make a little progress by taking action. By choosing to do the bare minimum rather than doing nothing, you make your day much better.
